AVS halal certification: what it really guarantees

The organisation, the presence of its inspectors, the logo on the pack: what AVS halal certification covers, and why Mon Deliss chose to carry no other.

On halal charcuterie, the certifier’s logo is often the first thing people look for. But you still need to know what it stands for. Here are the essentials on AVS certification: the one, and the only one, carried by the entire Mon Deliss range.

What is AVS?

AVS is a halal inspection and certification body. According to its own presentation, it is a private, non-profit organisation governed by the French law of 1901 and founded in 1991, whose purpose is halal inspection and certification.

The organisation states that it has more than a hundred employees, 80% of whom are assigned exclusively to inspection work.

A certification built on the presence of inspectors

This is the heart of the approach. AVS explains that its certification rests on “the physical presence of inspection agents from slaughter through to packaging”. The organisation also specifies that it issues no certification without its agents being present.

In practical terms, its employees are present all along the chain: from the slaughter of the animal to the packaging and sealing of the products. The inspection therefore does not stop at the abattoir; it follows the product until it is packed.

What the certification covers

AVS points this out itself: the organisation guarantees the halal quality of the products it certifies. When a brand commits to working with it, every product sold under that brand’s name must be certified.

The certification concerns halal status. Taste, recipe and composition are a matter for the manufacturer’s own commitments: it is up to the manufacturer to say what goes into its products, and what does not.

AVS also states that it pays particular attention to projects that put quality first, citing for example products free from mechanically separated meat (MSM).

How to recognise an AVS-certified product

The thing to look for is the AVS logo on the product. This is the check the organisation itself recommends: several establishments that work with it do not produce halal exclusively, and it is the presence of the logo that counts.

On a pack, look for the certifier’s logo, not just the word “halal”. The logo tells you who inspects, and how.

Why Mon Deliss chose AVS, and AVS alone

Mon Deliss is certified by AVS, and by AVS alone: the whole range, without exception. It is not one label among many added to a pack; it is the framework within which all our production takes place.

For those to whom this certification matters, it is not up for debate and cannot be replaced. That is why it is shown on every product page, alongside our other commitments: gluten-free, GMO-free, antibiotic-free, free from mechanically separated meat (MSM) and no colourings.
